What is Messenger Force for MSN?

Messenger Force for MSN is an instant messaging application that lets you:

  • Connect to the MSN Messenger Service.
  • See who is online.
  • Send an instant message.
  • "Chat" with a group of friends.
  • Get notified of new e-mail at Hotmail.
To use MSN Messenger Service on the Internet, you need a Passport; if you have a Hotmail/MSN account, that serves as your Passport.

How are instant messages different from e-mail messages?

Both instant messages and e-mail are ways to send messages over the Internet, but they differ in these respects:

  1. Messenger Force for MSN sends messages in real time. E-mail collects messages for you and lets you look at them later.
  2. Instant messages have a temporary quality. Unless you deliberately save them, they are gone when you close the message window. E-mail messages remain until deleted.
  3. Beyond sending and receiving messages, you can use Messenger Force for MSN to receive notifications of events such as the arrival of mail.

How are instant messages different from chats?

Exchanging messages with several people at once in an instant message window feels a lot like typing messages in a chat window. But there are important differences:

  1. Personalization: Using Messenger Force for MSN, you communicate with the people you want to. No strangers allowed.
  2. Privacy: The only people who know about the conversation are the people who have been invited to participate. It is not publicized or open to the world.
  3. Technology: Messenger Force for MSN uses the MSN Messenger Service which uses a different server technology than chatting does.

To sign-in to MSN Messenger Service.

  1. Launch the Messenger Force for MSN application.
  2. From the File menu tap on the "Sign in" item to launch the Sign-in dialog box, type your Sign-in name and Password there. (Passwords are case-sensitive; use the same spelling and capitalization as when you signed up for your account.)
  3. Make sure that the Sign-in name is specified in the correct format: username@domain.com.
  4. If you don't want to type your password every time you log on, select the "Remember my Name and password" check box.
  5. Tap OK.

You will be connected to the MSN Messenger Service and you should be able to see your contact list.

Tips

  • Although some sign-in names are case-sensitive, some are not. If you have trouble logging on, type your sign-in name exactly the way it was when you applied for it.
  • If your Passport is not recognized, try going to a Passport site (http://www.passport.com or http://www.hotmail.com) to make sure you are recognized there. If so, the messaging servers could be temporarily down. Wait a short while and then try again.
  • If you have selected the Auto-Dial option, ensure that the correct connection type has been specified, and the same connection has been established.

To get a new password

  1. On the Tools menu, tap Options and from there select the Accounts tab.
  2. Over there tap the "Sign-Up" button. This would launch Pocket Internet Explorer and would take you to a site that allows you to create a new Passport account. Please note that this feature is available only on devices that include Pocket Internet Explorer.
  3. When you've made your changes, tap OK.
